The Analyst

The Analyst was a periodical published in the 1950s and 1960s by the Department of English of Northwestern University, under the editorship of Robert Mayo. During its lifetime, it published articles dealing with Ezra Pound (exclusively The Cantos) and James Joyce (primarily Finnegans Wake).

Possibly due to its low-key appearance (its issues were mimeographed and left-hand-corner stapled), its small distribution (starting off as a departmental publication), its unassuming name (more appropriate for a department of chemistry), and its early-birdness (being the first periodical to devote whole issues to Finnegans Wake, years before the publication of A Wake Newslitter and James Joyce Quarterly), it has been all but forgotten. It is rarely mentioned in bibliographies (Thomas F. Staley's An Annotated Critical Bibliography of James Joyce being one exception, if an error-riddled one) and I have found it impossible to locate any source, paper- or web-based, that lists all the articles that have appeared between each issue's non-existent covers.

After years of searching, I have been able to lay my paws on a set of twenty-five issues of The Analyst, apparently almost all that was ever published. As kindly reported to me by Edward Burns, the final number of The Analyst was issue XXVI, which I am still looking for. As an aid to future generations who may wonder about the contents of these issues, I have laid out this page, which lists all the articles in all the issues of The Analyst I know of. The issues devoted to Ezra Pound (12 issues) appear in black, the ones devoted to James Joyce (14 issues) appear in red.
